My guest was Svava Brooks, co-founder of Blatt Afram, an organization dedicated to educating Icelands about the prevalence of child sexual abuse. They just sponsored a conference addressing strategies for prevention and healing in Reykjavik, Iceland. Speakers from the U.S. and Iceland addressed the latest technologies concerning treatment, prevention, risk management services, research methodologies and working with the developmentally disabled and the deaf.

The Human Capacity to Endure

My guest was Richard Hoffman, poet and author of HALF THE HOUSE, a "moving boyhood memoir" that resulted in the arrest, conviction and incarceration of a little league coach who had violated over 400 boys over a 40 year period. He is a speaker and activist on various human rights issues and is a board member of Massachusetts Citizens for Children, the oldest non-profit child advocacy agency in the commonwealth. He is writer-in-residence at Emerson College, where he teaches writing and literature. He also teaches in the Stonecoast MFA Graduate Program in Creative Writing at the U. of Southern Maine.

Racing to Stop the Silence

My guest was Dr. Pamela Pine, Founder and CEO of Stop the Silence, an organization committed to working with numerous individuals and groups to prevent and treat child sexual abuse in varied communities through research, training, education, advocacy, policy development and more. They sponsor the annual International Race to Stop the Silence every April in Washington, D.C. in partnership with races in California, Argentina and Canada. Another endeavor is the National Children's Bench Book for judges to educate them about the impact of child sexual abuse.

How Child Sexual Abuse Contributes to Mental Illness

My guest was Ann Jennings, Ph.D., who has been involved in raising public awareness and influencing fundamental changes in the way public mental health systems view and treat individuals with histories of unaddressed sexual and physical abuse trauma. Currently, she consults with the SAMHSA Center on Women, Violence and Trauma and other organizations nationally to create strategies for sustainable change to a trauma-informed model of delivering services. She is also the president of the Anna Foundation, Inc., which is dedicated to joining others in speaking truth about the effects of childhood trauma on individuals, promoting prevention and early intervention and providing resources for professional,community and survivor use. She is the mother of a young woman who was victimized by the system and eventually committed suicide. Her article, "On Being Invisible in the Mental Health System, has been published widely.

Human Trafficking

Minnesota Steering Team, and Victor Vieth, J.D., Director ofChild Abuse Programs for the American Prosecutors Research Institute, the National Center for the Prosecution of Child Abuse and director of the National Child Protection Training Center. Mr. Vieth has published countless articles and trained professionals throughout the country to deal with child abuse investigations, prosecutions, trial strategies and prevention methods. He is currently developing curriculums to teach college students how to investigate and handle child abuse cases.

My guest was Dr. Trish Hutchison, a pediatrician with the Medical University of South Carolina in the Adolescent Medicine Department, where she directs Girls2Women, a young women's health center. She has been named one of the best doctors in America. With her partner, Dr. Melisa Holmes, an ob-gyn, she started Girlology, a program that educates mothers and daughters about sexuality.
